8th Rotation Homework Theme -Hand(s)

Human hands are unique. No other creature in the world has hands that can grasp, hold, move, and manipulate objects like human hands.

Did you know the hand has 27 bones covered by many muscles & tendons?  Think of all your hands allow you to do everyday - so many things like writing, holding, carrying, playing games, using a computer, texting on phones and a million other things.

There are so many unique facts about out hands.  Old, young, dirty, wrinkly all the things you & your hands get into!  Do you know someone that can bend their thumbs to touch their wrists? Or maybe think of other forms of hands - hands of a clock, a hand of cards, from "hand-to-hand", "off-hand" and hands signals in sporting events.  Some of us talk with our hands in gestures or even without verbal language.  Imagine giving directions without using your hands!  So give your self a hand & get started right away on your HAND homework.

No matter if you are looking for the perfect reference for your sketchbook or for that perfect shot with the camera, keep the following in mind:

  • Try a new point of view, get down low or stand above & over your subject

  • Think beyond the obvious & and be creative

  • Always be thoughtful of your composition - PLAN your space! Remember you MUST utilize MARGINS in your sketchbook

  • Photos and sketches can NOT be manipulated on the computer - capture creativity in what you see

Sketchbook Directions

Sketchbook progress check MUST be done from direct observation.

You can use your own hand, have a friend or family member sit as your 'model'; but remember to have good, dramatic lighting for each pose.

For this progress check, you hand studies must include the following:

  1. TWO Contour Line Drawings (trace the shape with your eyes - primarily the outer/simplest edges)

  2. TWO Sketches (use a searching line as we did with the observation still life)

  3. TWO Value Drawings (that include shadows, mid-tones & highlights)

You may use one or two sketchbook pages as needed, keep the drawings free-flowing, you do not need composition lines.
