Creative Composition

Composition Reading Packet

Composition, which is the structure of a picture as separate both from subject and style, is essentially abstract design. It is the selection and organization of line, shape, value, texture, pattern, and color into an aesthetically pleasing arrangement embodying such principles of design as balance, harmony, rhythm, repetition and variation, dominance and subordination, and focus. The final desired effect of composition is a sense of unity. It has been suggested that good composition "supports the image so discreetly that it is never noticed."

Principles of composition are not hard and fast rules, never to be broken. They should be considered as guides or suggestions that have been recognized and used effectively by successful artists for centuries. The same artists felt free to interpret the principles, and you are urged to do the same, as long as the result justifies whatever you chose to do. To break rules effectively it is first necessary to know what they are.
