Anatomy of an Ad

A successful ad is more than just a great photo!

We will be learning about the different elements that go into every great magazine ad!  Not every advertisement will include the following vocabulary terms, but great ones will always be more than just a single headline and photo!

Vocab for this Rotation:

- 8.5x11 Magazine Ad             - Tagline

- Clipping Path                        - Copyright

- Sub Tagline                            - 3rd Party Tagline

- Logo                                       - Prop/Product

- Call to Action                         - Body Copy

First, will be finding an advertisement you like and labeling all the vocab with tracing paper.

Thumbnails sketches & Roughs

Next, you will be copying your labeled advertisement as a thumbnail and rough; and then re-designing a different found advertisement.

For thumbnail sketches, you do not need to write out all the body copy or headline, but you need to indicate where all that information will go!  Headline, headline ideas, taglines, body copy, call to actions, etc, will be written out separately when you have your first product shoot so that we can see all the elements you will eventually be including on your advertisement.  Remember that it may be a long time before you can make your ad on the computer, you need all the information listed out to refer back to when designing it. And someone else could have to make your advertisement based off of your thumbnails!

For the ad you are copying, you will do one thumbnail with all the info indicated; as well as complete a rough of the final adv.  Roughs should be close to full size.

For the adv you are redesigning, you will do 2-4 thumbnails with all the main info indicated. Once you have your thumbnails done, you will pick the strongest ideas to move forward to a single Rough.  Your rough must indicate color and have the headline and subhead written out fully, along with indication of any body copy, logos, and call to actions.  Roughs should also have a more defined drawing of your product layout.
