6th Rotation Homework Theme -Breakfast

Breakfast is the first meal taken after rising from a night's sleep, most often eaten in the early morning before undertaking the day's work.  To fast means to go without food. So “breakfast" means to break the fast you've been observing since you went to sleep the night before!

Did you know there are actual health benefits from eating breakfast -

  • Breakfast decreases appetite. Studies have shown that consuming breakfast first thing in the morning greatly decreases hunger and cravings throughout the day.

  • You will improve your memory. Carbohydrates are essential for healthy brain functioning.

  • You can prevent type 2 diabetes.

  • You will weigh less.

What's for breakfast? Any guesses what is a typical breakfast in Europe, China or Italy?  Do you know the difference of a Dutch breakfast from an American style breakfast?

  • In China people usually eat soybean milk and deep-fried dough sticks, steamed buns, tofu pudding, wheat noodles, or rice noodles for breakfast.

  • In Eastern Europe, breakfast typically is a substantial meal, including pickled meats, smoked sausages, pickled and fresh fruits and vegetables, hard-cooked eggs, cheeses, pastries, jams, jellies, and breads.

  • Italian breakfast (prima colazione) consists of caffè latte or coffee with bread or rolls, butter and jam. A cookie-like rusk hard bread, called fette biscottate, and cookies are commonly eaten. Children drink hot chocolate, plain milk, or hot milk with very little coffee.

  • A Dutch breakfast usually consists of sliced bread with any of the following toppings: appelstroop, cheese, cold meats, jam, honey, hazelnut-chocolate spread or sweet sprinkles, known as hagelslag.

  • An American Style breakfast usually includes two eggs, sliced bacon or sausages, sliced bread or toast with jam/jelly/butter, pancakes with syrup, cornflakes or other cereal, coffee/tea, orange/grapefruit juice.

No matter if you are looking for the perfect reference for your sketchbook or for that perfect shot with the camera, keep the following in mind:

  • Try a new point of view, get down low or stand above & over your subject

  • Think beyond the obvious & and be creative

  • Always be thoughtful of your composition - PLAN your space! Remember you MUST utilize MARGINS in your sketchbook

  • Photos and sketches can NOT be manipulated on the computer - capture creativity in what you see
