Introduction to Product Photography - Candy

Today, you will be photographing the Candy product/products of your choice.

This is your first commercial product shoot involving food and learning about food styling.  This is also the first studio assignment where you will take your photographs to make an 8.5x11 magazine ad.  You will also be learning the industry terms and key words utilized in designing a magazine ad.

First, you will be photographing your products packaging.  Each candy comes in a different packages; do you have a box, big bag, or an individual wrapper?  Make sure that package looks nice, has no dents or rips.  Watch your background too, you are required to use a flat, WHITE background for this clipping path. Make sure you have nice, even lighting and watch out for glares if your package is shiny!  You will need to photograph the packaging straight on, angled to the left and then to right.

A successful ad is more than just a great photo!

We will be learning about the different elements that go into every great magazine ad!  Not every advertisement will include the following vocabulary terms, but great ones will always be more than just a single headline and photo!

Vocab for this Rotation:

- 8.5x11 Magazine Ad             - Tagline

- Clipping Path                        - Copyright

- Sub Tagline                            - 3rd Party Tagline

- Logo                                       - Prop/Product

- Call to Action                         - Body Copy

You need to find an advertisement you like from the magazines you received in your supplies.  You will be labeling it with the vocabulary terms we just went over in class.  You can use a marker, post it notes, ripped paper pieces laid on top of the ad to label it!  Pick what will work best for you.  Take a photo of your labeled ad and upload it to the correct Teams assignment!

Thumbnails sketches & Photographing your Candy

Next, you will be designing 6-8 thumbnails for a candy of their choice.  You will sketch out vertical rectangles on a folded 11x17, no smaller than 2 inches wide.  You need to include your headline, a simple sketch of product layout, your body copy area, clipping path location and other vital info.  You do not need to show where the copyright is or write out all the body copy, but you need to indicate where all that information will go!  You also need to write out separately your headline, headline ideas, taglines, body copy, call to actions, etc so that we can see all the elements you will eventually be including on your advertisement.  Remember that it may be a bit before you can make your ad on the computer, you need all the information listed out to refer back to when designing it. Then turn your 11x17 over and make 2 full sized, color-indicated Roughs - these are what you will be photographing in studio!

Upload a photograph of your thumbnail page and roughs to the correct assignment on Teams.

Now its time to photograph your actual candy!  Open up your wrappers and make sure your candy is pristine looking.  You should not be using a chipped M&M, you may need to open a different Reese's cup if it has a dent in the side; look for the best piece you have.  You need to be making this candy look delicious, yummy and beautiful!

You will be photographing at least 2 different ideas, those should be your Roughs!

You make also utilize use those thumbnail sketches as well while photographing to get more variety overall.  Make sure you have good exposure, a nice looking product and you are leaving enough space for your design!  When you are done photographing, upload your contact sheet to the same assignment.

You will need a separate contact sheet of your clipping paths.
